Our knit-along (KAL) for Marin Melchior’s Butterfly/Papillon shawl began yesterday and runs through the end of October. Catch up with our technique/pattern tips anytime by checking in with the KAL conversation in our Ravelry group, here. Please join us and post your comments and questions!
Our sample (below) uses 2 skeins of Urth Uneek Fingering and one skein of solid color Urth Harvest. You can use self-striping yarns such as Uneek, gradients, or make it all in solids. Either way, the project takes approximately 420 yards of a contrast color (usually a solid) and a total 770 yards of main color(s).
Recently, my Instagram post of Jill’s completed Danzig* shawl was in the spotlight when it was reposted (with permission, of course) by a certain yarn store based in Reno, NV. We enjoyed our 5 minutes of fame! Justyna Lorkowska’s design was chosen to be our latest sample to show how beautiful Uneek Fingering can be even when it isn’t knit into a Butterfly.
The solid background is Wonderland Yarns Mary Ann in White Rabbit. You’ll need one skein.
The Uneek shade is #3004. You’ll need two skeins.
Oh, those colors!
And is it soft. Ellen chose Harvest, the naturally-dyed solid version of Uneek, for a woven scarf. How absolutely lovely is this?
Larissa Brown’s On Off Shawl* is one of my favorite patterns. It can be made with just about any weight yarn, to any size you want. It sits securely on your shoulders without pinning or tying, so it’s very easy to wear. Laurie wanted to make hers for cool summer-into-fall evenings and chose non-wool Berroco Remix. She made it gloriously all her own by choosing a lace pattern from a stitch dictionary and adding it to the hem of the shawl in a contrast color.
For my On Off Shawl in Lana Grossa Solo Lino, I made single row stripes with my three colors: a right side row in A (drop A), add B and work the next wrong side row in B (drop B), add C and knit the right side in C (drop C), pick up A to knit the wrong side, then B again for the right side, and on and on.
I am crazy about Solo Lino’s stitch definition. (More Solo Lino goodness coming in the next post – Brigid’s just-finished Windom Silk Wrap*.)
Last FO comes from Rebecca, her delightful Sailor’s Delight socks from Melissa Morgan-Oakes’ book 2 at-a-time Socks. Her yarn is Frolicking Feet by Done Roving Yarns. Talk about flashy!

Just checked tonight to see when it starts. Been in the hospital since su day. Had a widow maker heart attack. One stent put in Sunday and 2 more on Thursday. Glad it got started. Did you ever get 3006 in. ?
Hi, Marie! Jill and I are so glad to hear you are now on the mend. What a nightmare! About Butterfly, the KAL runs through October. Did you want 2 skeins of 3006 for a Butterfly? That color was not part of our original order, and it is unlikely that we will reorder the Uneek Fingering any time soon with all our new fall yarns arriving. However, if you’d like to place a special order, please let us know.
